Where to Start with AI and Automation in Your Business

1 July 20264 min read

AI and automation get discussed in sweeping terms, which makes it hard to know where to actually begin. The most useful starting point isn't the technology itself, but the repetitive, time-consuming tasks already slowing your team down.

Look for work that is high-volume, rules-based and low in ambiguity: data entry, document sorting, routine responses to common enquiries, or moving information between systems. These are the tasks where automation delivers a fast, measurable improvement without requiring a leap of faith.

It's worth resisting the temptation to automate everything at once. A single, well-chosen process, automated properly and monitored closely, builds confidence and a working template for what comes next.

It also helps to separate automation from AI. Automation follows fixed rules to do a defined task consistently. AI adds judgement, useful when a process involves interpreting language, images or patterns that don't fit neat rules. Many of the best wins combine both: automation handles the repetitive flow, and AI handles the parts that need a decision.

Whatever you choose to automate first, keep a person in the loop, at least initially. Reviewing outcomes for a few weeks before removing human oversight catches edge cases before they become problems.

Done this way, AI and automation don't need to be a transformation project. They're a series of small, practical improvements that free your team to spend time on the work that actually needs human judgement.
