Cybersecurity Basics Every Growing Business Should Get Right

15 June 20265 min read

Cybersecurity can feel overwhelming for a growing business. Headlines focus on sophisticated attacks, but in practice, most incidents exploit basic gaps rather than advanced techniques.

Access control is the place to start. Every account should require multi-factor authentication, and access to systems and data should be limited to what each person actually needs to do their job. When someone leaves the business, their access should be removed immediately, not eventually.

Patching matters more than it gets credit for. A large proportion of breaches exploit known vulnerabilities that already have a fix available. Keeping software, plugins and operating systems up to date closes doors that would otherwise stay open.

Backups are your safety net, but only if they're tested. A backup you've never tried to restore from is a hope, not a plan. Regularly verifying that backups actually work is as important as taking them in the first place.

People are usually the first line of defence and the most common entry point. Clear, practical training on spotting phishing attempts and suspicious requests does more for day-to-day security than most technical controls.

Finally, have a plan before you need one. Knowing who to call, what to isolate and how to communicate with customers if something does go wrong turns a crisis into a manageable incident.

None of this requires an enterprise security budget. It requires consistency. Getting the fundamentals right, and keeping them right, closes the majority of the gaps attackers rely on.
